Johns Hopkins Medicine Policy on Interaction with Industry
Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM) recognizes the value of working with industry to support our tripartite mission of research, education and clinical care. The JHM Policy on Interaction with Industry was adopted to ensure that these activities reflect the standards of excellence for which JHM is known and retain the trust and confidence of patients and the public. The Policy provides a framework for these activities to preserve evidence-based, independent professional judgment and objectivity, support legitimate scientific exchange, and avoid actual or perceived commercial promotion, marketing and endorsement.
The Policy has been in effect since 2009 and covers activity with biomedical, pharmaceutical, medical device and other companies that manufacture products used in the provision of medical care.
The Policy generally applies to full-time and part-time faculty and staff, trainees, students and volunteers of the School of Medicine and of all JHM member organizations including the Johns Hopkins Health System and its entities.
The Policy covers a wide variety of activities including but not limited to:
- Industry support of JHM programs and events
- Individual outside speaking and consulting
- Industry-provided food, gifts and travel
- Sampling and site access by industry representatives
